I mean, for the kiddies, jumpers for goalposts - fine.
But grown ups keen on playing? Watching?? Caring about it????
Sport as a spectacle in general. I mean, why don't people just get on with it without needing to have audiences which have much better things to do like making the world a better place, having sex etc? There's nothing onlookers can do about sport, other than make it another pretext for getting overexcited/triumphalist/defeatist/depressed about results, overpaid exhibitionists, WAGs, etc etc etc.
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."
So you didn't see the brilliant Monaco GP today? Starting behind the safety car in a downpour, then became a demolition derby on the damp track, then on lap 23 leader Ricciardo comes in for tyres - and they're still in their bags - handing the lead to Hamilton, who barely held him off for the rest of the race...
And what about that Prost/Senna style collision by both Mercs in Catalunya last time out? Helping 18-year old Verstappen to his first win!
After a dull coupla years five or six cars have a chance now, give it another go...! Life wouldn't be life without the Monaco Grand Prix. Champagne breakfast optional.

People only watch motor racing because they want to see crashes happening.
OK - next year, have the champagne before you watch it. (Don't worry darling, Sainsburys will do....) Then it really will be a craic...
(as for that old thing about crashes... http://www.jamesallenonf1.com/2016/0...ll-or-ferrari/
