    That's not a dictionary you've got there, it's a thesaurus.

A thesaurus deals in synonyms; a dictionary knows better.

Why did you deliberately alter my words in your 'quote' and believe that no one would notice, Mr GG?

      Are you really that naive?

A thesaurus is part of any comprehensive dictionary. One doesn't 'know better' than the other.

For the unaware, please note the dictionary definition of synonym:

a word or phrase that means exactly or nearly the same as another word or phrase in the same language, for example shut is a synonym of close.

        Hope this helps, jean.

... dictionaries can of course be useful. But they tend to focus on denotation rather than connotation. I don't think that PG Tipps pays sufficient attention to the connotations of some of the words he chooses - such as 'abnormal'.

And if there were one word I would recommend for abolition it wd be 'natural'...

          .

This is part of a popular hypertext guide to semiotics by Daniel Chandler at the University of Wales, Aberystwyth.

            I suspect it's Roger's Brontosaurus )

(I'm keen on this one though http://viz.co.uk/category/rogers-profanisaurus/ )

Why do you think they were in BOLD?

              Agreed about Tippster.

But with what would you replace "natural" as a term for a symbol indicating cancellation of sharps and double sharps, flats and duplexes I mean double flats?

Abnormal people in the night? - or on a train? Dr Abnormalove?

              Enough!

That may well be true and it's a fair point, though I'm normally fairly careful with my words, ever-conscious of the sensitivity of others.

However, my use of the word 'abnormal' in the context of the OP's experience surely had no 'connotations' whatsoever other than to those who were utterly determined that it did have and to enable them to pursue their quite separate and long-worn-out agendas!

The media is constantly telling us a club like Leicester City winning the Premier League is 'abnormal', which of course it is, but I suppose one or two L.C. supporters might consider that a quite unacceptable thing to say because of perceived 'connotations' that their club is in some way "strange". I think hypersensitivity on the part of the listener/reader might also be part of the same problem?

However, I'm not sure ahinton has actually decided on the word we should all use instead of 'abnormal' so I'll now plump for "atypical" myself!

Now I don't think that this one has its origins in the recently mentioned (elsewhere in this forum) Mr Wright or Mr Nichols, or even Sir Moore, but I wonder if I'll ever be able to listen to Król Roger again now withoutg being reminded of this...

Your supposed "quote" of mine #118 is not what I actually typed in #116 and there is no BOLD type anywhere!

#99. #112/114. How many more clues do you need? You really aren't concentrating, are you?! And in any case I did not "decide" on anything that "all" here should do, use or otherwise.

Ah, so not only what you said I said wasn't true, even what you said you said wasn't true either?

Just because you read something in a book or on a screen doesn't make it "true".
                            Now where's my Brontosaurus ?

Certainly, if a book has Mr GongGong as its author I consider that might well be very sage advice, Mr GongGong!

That may well be true, and if it is it's a tribute to a Jesuitical education.
