Pity we can't be literal and pass the conductor's baton. As 'the conductor' as artist in his own right is a relatively recent phenomenon, there just aren't enough generations to go round. Incidentally, who was the first 'star' conductor who wasn't also a noted composer? Hans von Bulow?
