    Passing the baton

Not the conductor's baton, but the relay baton.

A composer is born, then dies and passes the baton on to another.

    For example:

    Riccardo Broschi (c. 1698 – 1756)
    Mozart (1756-1791)
    Czerny (1791- 1857)
    Elgar (1857-1934)
    Peter Maxwell Davies (1934-2016)

    Any others?

That's far too clever, Alpie. But assuming there's some Re-Incarnazione at work, I've often wondered whose muse Bach, Handel and Scarlatti inherited in1685?
    (Maybe just a tad fanciful...Bach 1685 - 1750, Salieri 1750 - 1825 ?)

        Hans Zimmer 1957 -

Pity we can't be literal and pass the conductor's baton. As 'the conductor' as artist in his own right is a relatively recent phenomenon, there just aren't enough generations to go round. Incidentally, who was the first 'star' conductor who wasn't also a noted composer? Hans von Bulow?

                        Lou-Lou to his friends...

How many years have you been waiting to deploy that gem, vindetable?
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
                        Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."
