    Boaty MacBoatface

    What a story!
A man apologises for suggesting a new £200m ship should be named RRS Boaty McBoatface.

Typical tactics! Let's ask people what they think and then do what we were going to do in the first place.

Anyway, my favourite suggestion was Usain Boat.

Don't forget that 3.19 billion people have acces to the Internet. I could be talking to any of them.

The main thing is not to change the name of a boat once given. It can (in sailors' lore) lead to terrible bad luck unless a complicated and arcane ritual is followed......

There is so much to enjoy in that story, apart from the proposed name. For example -

"It was actually nothing to do with me. It was my suggestion but the storm that has been created has legs of its own."

              followed by

"I suggested this for the Condor Liberation when they had a poll, I bet they're kicking themselves now."

              and the screen shot -

I don't know why this story is so funny...I laughed all over again as I looked across the Mersey at the vessel in question this morning.

(Best thing really is that they're actually building things at Cammell Laird again.)

People often wonder whether there's any such thing as a "British identity" any more. Then you see something like this and find it highly amusing and you might think well yes, there obviously is.

Camels? They say committees are needed to design those...

There would, they said, be a prize for the winner. Several months passed. Everyone who also entered names forgot about it all and shrugged their shoulders. I decided to pursue it with the relevant section. No response. So I pursued it again and again until I got an answer. It turned out that they had dismissed all of the ideas that had been submitted without telling anyone and spent thousands of pounds of taxpayers' money on consultants. They came up with a name so similar to the one that I had submitted it was almost identical.
