I particularly remember those folk singers he used to introduce on Tonight, some of them beyond hopeless. But here he is, introducing a certain Bob Dylan, in 1964
Very much part of television for those of us of a certain age band. He's had his final Tonight on Earth.
RIP Cliff.
Quintessentially 'BBC' in those days. And pace Pabs's memory, unflappable, affable and - as far I remember - never in the headlines for the wrong reasons.
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.
Today - Radio 4 this morning - his son Guy said he had been driving to Waitrose until 6 weeks ago, and yesterday was sitting up in bed commenting on the brexit debate in the newspaper.....

- never does the expression "Way to go" seem more apt.

My main memory of him is the Holiday programme. I may, though, have seen him first when "All You Need is Love" was broadcast (I was with a crowd of about 20 people by a television set in a guest house in West Wittering). Or, later, on Southern TV's evening news programme (when visiting family) which always seemed happier than what we had in the London region. Was he with Jean Metcalfe (and Katie Boyle?) on Two-Way Family Favourites? If so, that is where I would have listened to him first. Sundays, mid/late 1960s.

Indeed - Mrs Michelmore, no less. Good that she is topping Google searches for "jean" today They were co-presenters for 6 months before they actually met in person.
Lovely, genial personality whether on-air or off. He paired so well with Jean Metcalfe on Two Way Family Favourities, or with Fyfe Robertson (?) on Tonight. RIP

The Tonight programme his co presenters/reporters also included Alan Whicker, Brian Redhead and Kenneth Allsop, to say nothing of Derek Hart, Geoffrey Johnson-Smith, Chris Brasher and Polly Elwes.

Ah yes, thank you for this, Richard and Stanley.
He apparently described it as "love at first hearing" which is a very advanced sort of outlook, I feel.
Two-way family favourites - a staple programme for Sundays, though it is ever remembered by me as the place where I first heard 'Both Sides Now' by Judy Collins. I liked and trusted Cliff Michelmore - he was kinda like a friendly neighbour from up the street.

Indeed. Surprised to read that Tonight ended as early as 1965. It must have been on often in our house. I have very clear memories - especially Alan Whicker and Fyfe Robertson.
