When we arrived the great man was sitting by the front gate taking the entrance money. I was so happy to be able to thank him personally for making the music of my youth.
That is lovely. Thanks for sharing this Gurney

Mrs. PG texted me at work. I thought I'd share the news with my collegues over lunch.

            'George who...?!'

            'You know, the Beatles producer'.

            Blank faces all round.

Anyway, RIP Sir George. Thanks for the music.

Can't decide whether this is patronising, unnecessary or both.

Ignore him - he just doesn't like the Beatles, in particular Macca.

I don't think it's either - George Martin was involved in very many projects aside from the Beatles, some of which (Charlie Drake???) do have a certain whiff about them.

edit: mind you, if Cloughie is right MrGongGong is cruising for a bruising.

                    I didn't mention the Beatles.
I assumed MrGongGong was referring to George Martin's work generally.
Now I'm asking myself the same question (patronising, unnecessary?) about your reference to Charlie Drake.
You are a "lofty" lot here aren't you.

If Charlie Drake is your benchmark, yes!

My Grandfather was stationed at Edinburgh Castle for a period in the 60's and one night, Charlie Drake came to pay a visit. Alas, he was too late for the last admission but the Sergeant on duty recognised him and said 'It's ok, Charlie, we'll bend the rules for you this once'. C D was invited to the guard house where he spent two hours entertaining the off-duty soldiers. My Grandfather said he's never laughed so much in his life.

The next day, 5 cases of beer were delivered to the mess, courtesy of CD who left a note saying he'd had a great time.
