Change Afoot for Saturdays and Sundays in April

There was a reference to Rob Cowan moving from Sunday mornings to Saturdays in yesterday's 'chat' between Martin Handley and Rob Cowan - about 01:42:49 in. Apparently he's just one more Sunday morning programme before he moves.

I suppose there might be some info in the next BBC MM - due out on Wednesday.

Well spotted, Andrew :-) Rumour had it that there were to be changes to the Sunday morning programme - but what does that mean for Rob? I can only see Saturday Classics being replaced … Unless Andrew McGregor - but perish the thought ! Music Matters? Wasn't there something about a new programme for Tom Service? Yes, found it: "we are introducing a new programme that reflects on the pied piper of yesteryear. It will be presented by Tom Service …" AD speech to the Voice of the Listener and Viewer.
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

Subsrcibers already have the April issue. Up to April 30th there is no sign of change to the current Saturday or Sunday schedule format bar a "chamber music recital (tbc)" from 10:45 to noon on Sunday 24th. Looks like it might just be a case of musical chairs.

The latest issue of BBC MM does have rather a lot of tbc in the radio listings. It never used to be like this.

But the BaL items are listed.
I've started to alert Alpie so he has more time to compile his lists.
Hope I've not made his efforts look any the less impressive!

Lots of "rpt" indications, but I only noticed two other "tbc" items, both evening concerts, so it looks like it's just the specific music and performers which were yet to be confirmed by bedtme.

It will be presented by Tom Service
He is rapidly becoming the Clare Balding of Radio 3.

Yes, breathless, wordy, gabbling and stuttering. So ideal as a presenter.

                  I don't think he's that way inclined

Clare Balding is a brilliant if slightly over exposed presenter - Cowan isn't brilliant but is over exposed.

I think the 'problem' with Rob Cowan is that he's essentially a music writer who got lucky with a broadcasting job. I suspect his interviews are not great because he's not a trained journalist and so finds it difficult to be probing with his subjects who often have a very limited knowledge of 'art music'. I've always felt that he's 'one of us' in that he has tremendous knowledge and enthusiasm so, IMHO, I'm prepared to forgive his shortcomings in other areas.

There's a rather wonderful violinist who I imagine would be pretty devastated if he were...

Anyway, having observed TS acquit himself pretty decently on the recent Leningrad Symphony television broadcast, it is clear that he's by no means always "breathless, wordy, gabbling and stuttering".
