It would be nice to see television versions of the Crispin books, naturally they would have to be in period. Gervaise Fen would be just as popular a character as Poirot, provided that they found as good an actor as John Suchet. I can imagine him buzzing around Oxford in Lily Christine III
Isn't John Suchet the Beethoven-loving, news-reading brother? I think Poirot was David.

And then those with so-called 'perfect bindings' ( a misnomer if ever there was one) - ie single pages stuck into a glued spine rather than folded and bound into proper folded and sewn sections - all too common in the 1970s and 1980s - well, the glue solidifies, becomes brittle, - and on opening the book all the pages fall out...
My Ralph Hill: The Concerto (Pelican) has had detached pages for decades. I used it for A level work in the 60s; I recall that it had an indispensable analysis of the Berg Violin Concerto. How long will it be before we get a reply from a soulless Philistine saying that Kindles or iWhatevers don't suffer from fading pages?

David had to remove the tache when he read the news, in case somebody noticed.

Margery Allingham's Campion stories don't seem to hav e been as popular on TV as the two Christie 'tecs but I would have thought they were overdue for a repeat.

The Peter Davison/Brian Glover series from the '80s was last televised three years ago during the Christmas/New Year daytime slots. The lead roles (including Lysette Anthony) were well played, but the supporting cast gave very "am dram" performances. It would be nice to see the Edward Petherbridge/Harriet Walte Peter Wimsey stories (from the same vintage) again.

Yes the Wimsey stories were well cast weren't they?

                    Mark Williams as Father Brown....

He's also playing Beach the butler in the Emsworth (Tim Spall) adaptations coming up on BBC in the new year...

Could be great as both, could be...

Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
                    Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

Yes - when it was Ian Carmichael and Glyn Houston. Never got on with Petherbridge...

Cheers Cali. Love FB. I wonder if a TV update will do justice to these wonderful stories?

Yes, it's the Carmichael/Houston voices that I "hear" when I read the novels (reading Clouds of Witness for the nth time at the moment). But I also liked the Petherbridge versions when they were shown and I'd like to see how they compare with my memory of them.
