    Le merle noir is a Messiaen bird for flautists, and more specifically Daniel Morlier and Alexander Murray were among the winners of the 1952 Concours de flute at the Paris Conservatoire for which it was the test-piece.

                            Well, we have Messiaen's 'Oiseaux Exotiques' of which there are, I think 13 or thereabouts. In the second case, you're looking for just a couple of birds. The woodwind player's father devised a long-running Radio 4 programme.
