And 1847 is pretty close to 1850 That's the unfamiliar work by a familiar composer identified, but still a little work needed to pull up the properly linked four as per my original posting.

Antony Pitts doesn't help at all I'm afraid - his website suggests he doesn't quite go back before 1850

I'm in even more of a haze of cigar smoke now: how does Jerusalem (the title) NOT contain the letter J?

Phew, proper allowances were made therein so as to cover LMcD's contribution!

Pulc: also, I did very carefully use the words 'work...identified' in my edited reply to LMcD. Ponder this - maybe a little more research on it needed?

Oh dear, my own further research reveals that my scrupulous qualification (as I thought) re the Verdi and pedants distinctly understated the case But as I say, a bit more research should still crack it.

Pulcinella's cigar-smoke question is key to the loose relationship between the works as per original question.

Well, Verdi's Jerusalem seems to be a reworking of I lombardi, which doesn't have a J in it.
              Does that help?
(I do hope that eventually you'll tell me what the cigar has to do with anything. )

No, I Lombardi is irrelevant, and isn't the reworking the other way round? (EDIT No, Pulc is perfectly correct) Dig further into JĂ©rusalem itself.

The cigar was simply your prize for your first reply - would a coconut have suited better??

To recapitulate what you know so far as all seems to gone worryingly quiet

J is for Jerusalem. I wanted 4 loosely linked vocal works that have something to do with this, but do NOT have a J in the title for the same reason. Pulcinella was quickly on the right track. Verdi's JĂ©rusalem should get you very close and detailed research on it is strongly recommended.

Diligent searching could probably find more than the four works that I wanted (I picked this number after a short search of a very popular website once I'd formed my idea) and I'll accept any that fit the date bracket and the genre of 'vocal works'.

The start of the date-bracket at 1581 is the publishing date for a certain Tasso work which is relevant, very specifically in one case but less so with the other works I had in mind at the start.

The closing date of 1850 was to squeeze in, and steer towards, the Verdi but is not particularly important, though I don't think there'll be many more such works after this.

It really is very simple guys!

I'm fairly comprehensively stumped at present...is Torquato Tasso significant?

No. I think - subject to correction - that I and J are pretty much the same letter here. Try another letter!

A wee bit significant - see my #2978. We've already had a useful reference to something he was up to in 1581. This was indeed my reason for picking that date.

There may be an interesting discussion to be had later on exactly how far he's significant in the wider context of the answer (over the period say 1581-c.1850), but don't worry about that now.

C'mon guys, the answer really is quite simple...

                            ...or so I thought!

Perhaps it's so far down from the incredibly obscure detail of many Q&As here as to be off the radar? (No cunning clues at all in this bit of the message!)

Cryptic nudge in the right direction:
