Now for a J but from whom. Contributors to solution were Anton, LMP and Sub. On balance maybe LMP?
I agree, Anton did bugger all, subs was right there in the firing line but an LMP question would be excellent

Really?? I'm deeply honoured to be putting up the second Cornish puzzle in a row - pity it wasn't K for Kernow eh, Cloughie?

Must say I thought I'd cracked the I with Sull-Ivan's Mikado; the Ippolitov-Ivanov was just a whimsical afterthought.

Well, here's my J. Or J's, sort of.

My key J figures year after year on these boards, this year no exception by any means.

But what I want are 4 related vocal works and their composers, the titles of which do NOT contain the letter J, all for the same reason. (OK pedants, there's maybe one partial exception.) No need to look after 1850, and probably no point before 1581.
I keep hitting the Escape key, but I'm still here!

Is this something to do with old/alternative spellings such as Ierusalem for Jerusalem?

            That's completely stumped me.
Surely nothing to do with Havana?

Not to my knowledge, no. But some the clever people here could probably make a connection if pushed! Even if only "I'm sorry, I havana clue"...

[NB this posting contains no info/clues whatsoever on the J puzzle.]

(Or, as Andy Millman would say: 'Is he avin' a laugh? IS HE AVIN' A LAUGH?')
I guess Jerusalem might appear regularly on these boards during discussions of the Last Night Of The Proms?
'Jerusalem Liberated' was first published in 1581.

... it must surely have generated more operas and suchlike than any other piece of writing -

Is Handel Israel in Egypt anywhere in the running?

Vinteuil's Wiki list is helpful but not bang on the button: see original clue.

Just to help a little, I asked for 4 and I found these easily via a certain website. There are probably a good few more which I won't reject as long as they satisfy the original spec. But I definitely want the one closest to 1850! Not a familiar work I believe, but a very familiar composer (not beginning with J).

Verdi's opera 'Jerusalem' premiered in 1847...and there's a Jerusalem Oratorio by Antony Pitts
