I don't usually contribute to puzzles immediately after I've set one, but to push the ball a bit further onto the field - is (one of) the "Charles(es)", Ives, and is the "Roland" there a reference to "Rollo"?

Charles in (a) and Charles in (b) are not necessarily the same Charles and could be different sorts of writers.

I am becoming more nervous about whether my puzzle fits together the longer time goes on but it has been set genuinely and I think it is ok.

You are looking for a librettist and a translator - that is what I mean by a difference between the two although that sort of distinction is grey.

Additional clues:

All the stuff about Sweden and Swedish sports was a complete red herring but you might find something in that Roland photo, albeit obliquely.
