    Much less cunning than those - what was the character's name?

      I had gone on to jeans. Maggie Smith was in The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie.

      Oh.....and her character in Quartet is Jean.

          And Jean Rigby is an opera singer.

          Jeans.

          The Hess will be very difficult.

          It's not a tutu.

          I thought of torridly but doubt it is linked.

            - might be useful - but if you go for Gold, you'll be playing false.

                No - Sorry, I thought you had it with Tutu. Where would you usually see someone wearing a tutu?

                  Erm, that reference to false if it is a clue suggests true(s)/trews (because there is an opposite in the clue) but I think I may be drifting here.

                  Tutu - ballet.

                    It is indeed a pair of Trues/trews (hence the "sounds like" in the clew) - so you now need some connection between True

                    ballet.
                    ... and Hess.

                      I don't think I am going to get this bit.

                      Might be being thick but I'm not sure which Hess this is and am currently thinking about Ernst.

                            Spandau Ballet - True?

                            This fits in with your earlier reference to going for "Gold".

                            .....or maybe not - why Gently?

                            I think I will hand it across.

                              - and the single had "Gently" on the "B"-side.

                              So - two sopranos (one factual, one fictional) gives us a pair of Jeans;
                              two versions by Handel gives us a pair of Pants;
                              and a pair of Trues from Spandau Ballet.

                              Three different names for Trousers - brilliantly solved, Lats. It's U (or V or W if you prefer) next!
