Ah ha! or should I say Arrrr harrrrr !! Avast there me hearties arrr harrrrr....

'Tis Captain Blood then, for one element!

Could the tramp refer to the Pauper...?

But what's the blood connection? And who the hell is Hildegard then?

Bit late for this sort of thing....
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
        Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

Oh - I thought Flay had implied (by not saying it was wrong, as he did with the Tramp element) that your Hildegard suggestion was correct?

            Arrrrrrr harrrrr!!

            In addition to

            - Captain Blood

we have the tramp immortalised repeatedly by Gavin Bryars in

            - Jesus' Blood Never Failed Me Yet.

and thus Hildegard has to be she of Bingen: Voice of the Blood ?

Cross-posted - hadn't thought of it that way, but you have a point, I think!

And I think you've got it with Bryers! (Kicking myself for not thinking of this - I'd been through all the lyrics of Kipling's "Boots", and Messaien's Joie du Sang des Étoiles trying to find a connection with "planets" = "travellers" - "tramps" .... )

                It's half-past midnight, folks!

                    Naughty!

                    Championship point to Calibs:

Hildegard von Bingen - Cum Vox Sanguinis etc etc
Korngold - music for Captain Blood
Bryers - Jesus' Blood Never Failed Me Yet (described on Amazon as for "Tramp with Orchestra (string quartet)"

                    Come on, Calibee!!!

                      Bryars, Flay and ferney

I must say it was ferney's nudge towards Erich Wolfgang which kept me going, although I suppose I'd already got the bloody solution.

Anyway since you ask, I do have a little something for the AA brains:

St Ninian inspires the Diospyros to flourish in Strathclyde… Which C please?

Hadn't intended to play --- busy, and still too gloomy here (though Irish passport application form has arrived), but inspiration struck.

I think that we are talking clarinet or concerto, or maybe both.

Ninian: concerto for clarinet and orchestra by James MacMillan.
One of the species of the genus Diospyros is ebony; so we have Ebony concerto (for clarinet) by Igor Stravinsky.
And although Jimmy Mac has Stratchclyde connections, I suspect that what's being looked for is Strathclyde concerto 4, for clarinet and orchestra, by Peter Maxwell Davies.

A classic clean sweep, Mr P - very well done. Yes my first clue was going to be that it was a double 'c' solution...

Are you too busy to set and superintend the D ... in which case shall we play 'Clapham Junction' Rules and anyone who's so inclined can board the AA Train, and set the next one?
