I was thinking along the lines of the ranz des vaches in Strauss' Don Quixote ... and perhaps something to do with Copland's Cowboy ballets ...

No. It was something C said about a contemporary, and S about himself

Erm ... I'm aware that Mozart said of himself that he composed "as naturally as a cow pisses"; and that Philip Heseltine said that listening to RVW's Music was "all just a little too much like a cow looking over a gate". But Strauss and Copland?

Copland was talking about RVW's music too.

And Strauss' comment was similar to WAM's.

Oh - Listening to the Fifth Symphony of RVW is like staring at a cow for 45 minutes opined Copland (whose witty badinage was evidently as derivative as his Music).

And Richard Strauss said that composing his Alpine Symphony came as easily to him as a cow gives milk.

                      Plus Grieg's "Woodentops" melody.

Quite an udders feeled festive note to this puzzle!

Ouch! Not one of your favourite composers, I suspect.

Don't mess with Ralph is all I'm saying. The boys don't like it when you miss with Ralph.

Although, on reflection, perhaps "whose witty badinage wasn't quite up the level of originality of his Musical style" is more accurate. To give him due credit, Copland sounds like no other composer (except all those composers who try to imitate him).

I cud not have bettered that answer. It wasn't off the hoof. You deserve a Lutyens on the back.

My translation of the Grieg piece was Cow-Call. I didn't know it was the Woodentops' theme. That's the of AA!

What Vernal Vituperation are you Venturing, ferney?

Idyllic life down on the farm with Mummy, Daddy, Jenny, Willy and Baby Woodentop. Buttercup the cow and Spotty Dog also made appearances

... one of my very earliest memories - possibly going back before memory, and certainly well over half-a-century ago! (One day, when I'm drunk enough, remind me to show you my "Spotty Dog" impersonation.)

(I'm going to start re-listening to Grieg; I like Grieg.)

What Vernal Vituperation are you Venturing, ferney?
Vernal was something I was trying to put together last night - doesn't really work without bringing "Spring" in. So, playing further with the alphabet:

51 Bryan Symphonies; a Gold Medal for Metastasio's swimmer: was this the First Beetle?
