... if people are looking for further clues :

the liner notes to the CD I am looking at describe this musician as "one of the most significant British composers of the 18th century" - the affectionate sobriquet by which he was known refers to his violin playing - and the five day entertainment for which he provided music, at the Oaks in Epsom in June 1774, was the first fête champêtre held in Britain ...

And there was me thinking (but getting no further than that; busy, and away for the weekend) that, with recent interest and the resolution of the Hillsborough inquiry, it might be Pat Kop we were talking about!

Your clues have led me to François-Hippolyte Barthélémon, French-born, London resident violinist who wrote music for aristocratic wedding festivities in Epsom.... but a K I kannot see...
"...the isle is full of noises,

... might it help if I reminded you that 'capillaire' is the name for the maidenhair infusion : there was a club dedicated to it of which our composer was Sovereign, and for which he composed a minuet?

Alas I have been at the wheel since shortly after the 'maidenhair and minuet' nudge....

I think that Havergal Brian's Symphonic Variations may be helpful, but all tomorrow I'm forging swords, slaying dragons and waking people who aren't a man so can't play.

... so we have Thomas Alexander Erskine, 6th Earl of Kelly: b.1732, d.1781.

...studied composition and violin with Stamitz.
...wrote minuets for Lord Stanley’s Fête Champêtre, at The Oaks near Epsom, in 1774.
...wrote the above composition in honour of his own Capillaire Club, whose members drank the eponymous infusion of maidenhair fern flavoured with orange-flower water.
...wrote the overture "The Maid of the Mill"

Stamitz is the only part of the above that I had ever heard of before around 19:23 today. Where do you get this stuff from, vinmousseux - abstruse CD booklets?

Have you been at the capillaire too, (maidenhair) ferns?

Afterthought - just realised what on earth you're talking about: another bout in the Ring with Siegfried Cooper?

Given that I am reasonably confident in the quality of the koleslaw duly served up for Monsieur v, might I venture onward?

OK then - in relation to this L, old Havergal, as well as Arnold and John, were very singular; Ernest doubled up and Jean and Antonin went and multiplied….

So what the L is it?
