Erm ... well, apart from McKonkey's, of course

And the enormous orchestra for A Jazz Symphony probably takes longer than the 8 minutes performance time to get set up!

Are buzzers used in the Ballet Mechanique?

It's not the 'shortness' of the symphony, though.
I'm pretty sure you will have found the right chap, so am surprised if the catalogue of works does not supply at least two of the answers you need.
The three works have been recorded (I have the CDs), so feature on the Presto site listings for this composer.

So, tell us who you are thinking of.

        Yes, McKonkey's Ferry.
Yes, the 'instrumentation' of Ballet Mécanique calls for electric buzzers (small electric bell and large electric bell in the 1953 revision, which is the recording I have, on Naxos).

So what is the diminutive symphony, and who is he?

I don't think I've ever seen a picture of him in his birthday suit, but this is indeed the chap if not the symphony I was thinking of, which is his Symphony for five instruments.

Cali might have to agree, but I think you can put your best foot forward and ponder a B for us while the Z gets solved.

I suggest solving my Z first!!!

Then there'll be minimal confusion as we proceed....

Yes it is Daniel and the Sitkovetsky you're after is the one who shared a teacher with Master Hope...

Ah! I missed the quintet Symphony" - which fits better than my choice.

I think the Z is Zurich - the chamber orchestra of which premiered Penderecki's Intermezzo for 24 Strings; Dmiktri Sitkovetsky has frequently conducted them; they're a group of virtuosi ... and Daniel Hope is their current Music director. The "father & son" aspect I can't find, and (as with the "bad boy" prompt) it was the extra hint of "Hope" that led me to my answer.

We're trying, or at least mercia is (and might be waiting for a response!).
And it looks like ferney might have cracked it, though without knowing why!

David Zinman was associated with the Zurich Tonhaller Orchestra; not sure if that helps or hinders, though!

PS: crossed postings again; mercia has now had his response.

Oh. Well Hope and Alexander Sitkovetsky were both taught by Yehudi Menuhin.

I didn't, as I was looking for a (sur)name, or possibly shared name: Efrem Zimbalist Senior and Junior, at one point in my search!

That's why I went for Zukofski.

Of course - it might still be: Zurich hasn't been given the thumbs-up, yet.

Just home. Further clues follow "momentarily" !

So Sitkovetsky (D.) and Hope (D.) were both taught by father Z, as was son Z. And dad was also involved in the Penderecki première.
