What L links Smyth, Hill and Leifs?

      Here's a better one:

      What other L connects (a) a composer of a grand tarantelle, (b) a bug's man and (c) LaMothe?

      It isn't lepidoptera.

Whoever provides an answer to either of the above will be given the M question.
Stuck on the easy one (are we talking Dame Ethyl?) but will suggest Louis for the 'better' one.

Louis Gottschalk wrote a Grande Tarantelle, Op 67
Loius Pasteur enabled us to have bug-free milk on our breakfast cereal
Louis Lamothe is apparently a French academic artist (never heard of him!)

        On 1, yes, Dame Ethel.

On 2, Gottschalk is correct but the answer isn't Louis.

I suggest Leipzig as the link for the first three: Ethel Smyth, Alfred Hill and Jón Leifs all studied at the Leipzig Conservatory.

Is the second one Louisiana? Louis M Gottschalk was born in Louisiana, Randy Newman (composer of the score for A Bug's Life) lived there as a child, and Ferdinand Joseph LaMothe (a.k.a. Jelly Roll Morton) was born there and started his career there.

            Correct in all respects.

My posting of Ludovic Lamothe (small m) on the listening thread yesterday was a red herring.

Hadn't spotted that Lamothe, but did notice that my Louis suggestion did not have a capital, so it was a pretty wild guess!

Subcontrabass - you have the honours for an amazing answer.

I was struggling from yesterday with several possibilities for Louis, none of which (apart from Gottschalk) seemed to quite fit.
