Like they all have a part for a cornet or a contrabassoon?

                My thinking, too.

To clarify further; we're talking about the Symphonie Fantastique, the Roman Carnival Overture, and the Symphonie Funebre et Triomphale?

Cor blimey, pardon my English - were you correct to dismiss the cygne unless the hectoring was Roman as well as in the field - enough to turn Dido to tears!

Yes to the first two. Cornet is nearly there if playing charades.

Lamentably the other work is another composer

So is it cornet or cor anglais or something else.

I suspect that "nearly there" means we need more letters, rather than fewer - Cornet a piston, for example. (Although I prefer mine with raspberry sauce.)

                        EDIT: there again, perhaps not.

                                There's a cornet à pistons in Monsieur Bizet's Carmen....
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
                                Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."
