    I blink and suddenly there’s a U turn.

      Early morning, yes.
      Don't get the haircut connection.
What pieces do you think are referenced?

Nowhere beginning with a U. Local barber in the 'village', as it likes to think of itself.

            Am I missing something?

The performer's first name certainly has an early-morning connection, though.

              Yes, I'm being dim.

But that's only one of the three pieces, and we need the performer.

is Dawn Upshaw's recording of Knoxville Summer of 1915 involved in some way?

The U is certainly for Upshaw, and Knoxville (1915) is one of the three recordings she is famous for.
                  The other two?

Described as a "nativity oratorio",[1] it retells the Christmas story, with the first half focusing on Mary's thoughts before the birth in the stable in Bethlehem, and the second half covering the aftermath of the birth, Herod's slaughter of the Holy Innocents, and the early life of Jesus. (Wiki)

So, we have Dawn Upshaw, and three of her renowned recordings:
Gorecki: Symphony 3 (Symphony of sorrowful songs)
                          Adams: El niño
                          Barber: Knoxville, Summer of 1915

                          Now, who's going for victory?

Apologies for my own confusion earlier.
I thought that 'Early morning haircut' was a reference to 'Dawn Upshaw', and couldn't see how Upshaw was a hair style.

Ah, all I could find at the top of Amazon's Upshaw list was Songs of the Auvergne and a Handel opera, neither of which looked exactly 'famous'. Had forgotten the Adams even though it's on the shelves

I know it's the wrong season, but I might take it down from my shelves too and give it a spin (or at least read the booklet!).

PS: I'd forgotten that Lorraine Hunt Lieberson was also in the cast.
