The Ragged answer (following the original clue) is Ragamuffin:

Giuseppe Valentini, composer (amongst other things), was nicknamed Straccioncino (Little Ragamuffin)
Modest Petrovich Mussorgsky composed the song "Озорник" (title translates as "The Urchin" or "The Ragamuffin")
John Ireland composed London Pieces for piano, of which number 2 is entitled "Ragamuffin"

I think I'd have only got near it if you'd thrown in Manfred Mann!

And there I was, a little like ferney, thinking of Rudolf/Rudolph Valentino, then, instead of his red nose, some red roses for today, or that Ravel orchestrated Modest's Pictures, or .....

At least the answer wasn't Rigoletto, to make me even more red faced!

If anyone is having problems hammering away at this you might find it easiest to start at the end.

I was wondering if Delius (with the help of Fenby) might be involved?

No. Try starting with late summer.
