What an impossible question (in the OP I mean).

To answer it, you risk being

    (a) conceited
    (b) dodgy
    (c) a total basket case
    (d) delusional
    (e) all the above

I s'pose if pressed, I'd like to have been someone like Palestrina, who having hit on a winning formula, churned it out and had the satisfaction of hearing the stuff performed willy-nilly. OMG, there's always Karl Jenkins........

      That's very unfair to Palestrina!

He wasn't very fair to me. I had to do 5-part Palestrina pastiche for my finals! Anyway, I've just thought of another reason for being him:

He seems to have considered becoming a priest......... but instead he remarried, this time to a wealthy widow.

The Birmingham Post reviewed a concert this week and commented on orchestral balance that Brahms must be built from the bottom up.

Does your affinity with Brahms mean that you have spindly legs, a fat bum and keep falling over, Charabanc...

Good Heavens, I do hope not ... one fat and ugly Brahms is quite enough, thank you.

Is the review available online,Z? If so I'd like to see what Mr Morley's been penning.

...oh, so you admit to (a), (c) and (d) then?

At risk of being a spoilsport, ff, that isn't a portrait of Dowland, just some random bloke with a lute . No image known beyond doubt to be of Dowland has ever come to light. There was a long and learned article in Lute News (journal of the Lute Society) about a recent contender, can't find my copy just at the moment!

Not quite an answer to the OP, but two composers - based on their biographies and/or autobiographies - speak most directly to me as people. One - Berlioz - was in many ways a tragic figure, and I certainly don't share his propensity for emotional extremes. The other is Franz Liszt. I decided after reading Alan Walker's magisterial 3-vol biog that he (after Dowland of course ) was the composer I'd most like to have known. A figure of great and unselfish generosity, loyalty and nobility of spirit, once you look beyond the showmanship of the "virtuoso years". Several great composers owed him a debt, Wagner immeasurably so, though none were capable of accepting such generosity in a similar spirit, and showed themselves to be lesser people as a result.

I managed to track this down, and I am Schumann. Oh dear. Makes a change from Shostakovich, I suppose.

The composers whose qualities and personalities I have found most interesting are Britten and Schubert, but I don't think I'm very like either of them. (I wouldn't have minded being married to Peter Pears, though ). There are no female composers who come to mind as soulmates.

Indeed - at least that gets you out of "Clara" duties!

... much relieved - mine is JS Bach. Lord knows what he made of 'Brokeback Mountain'.

There are several of these quizzes if you search "What composer are you?" - I was Beethoven in WETA's, Schumann in CFM's and Debussy in Music Notes Myers-Briggs these ain't.
