I s'pose if pressed, I'd like to have been someone like Palestrina, who having hit on a winning formula, churned it out and had the satisfaction of hearing the stuff performed willy-nilly. OMG, there's always Karl Jenkins........

John Dowland Sans beard, of course.

At risk of being a spoilsport, ff, that isn't a portrait of Dowland, just some random bloke with a lute . No image known beyond doubt to be of Dowland has ever come to light. There was a long and learned article in Lute News (journal of the Lute Society) about a recent contender, can't find my copy just at the moment!

Not quite an answer to the OP, but two composers - based on their biographies and/or autobiographies - speak most directly to me as people. One - Berlioz - was in many ways a tragic figure, and I certainly don't share his propensity for emotional extremes. The other is Franz Liszt. I decided after reading Alan Walker's magisterial 3-vol biog that he (after Dowland of course ) was the composer I'd most like to have known. A figure of great and unselfish generosity, loyalty and nobility of spirit, once you look beyond the showmanship of the "virtuoso years". Several great composers owed him a debt, Wagner immeasurably so, though none were capable of accepting such generosity in a similar spirit, and showed themselves to be lesser people as a result.

I managed to track this down, and I am Schumann. Oh dear. Makes a change from Shostakovich, I suppose.

The composers whose qualities and personalities I have found most interesting are Britten and Schubert, but I don't think I'm very like either of them. (I wouldn't have minded being married to Peter Pears, though ). There are no female composers who come to mind as soulmates.
