(I'd skipped over the "Mozart's contribution [being] 36 measures" in my joy of imagining a setting of the 30 verses of the text. )

Yes - "measures" is the American English for "bars". (It may be Italian or German in origin - but when I tried to ascertain this, Google kept getting referring me to drinking establishments. Based on my search history, I suppose!)
