    R.I.P. Leslie Nielsen

Star of Ben Hur screen tests, High Noon, Forbidden Planet and 101 bad guys, the great Canadian-born star has died at the age of 84.

He also made some other films.

    He made me laugh.

Death seems to have really come back into fashion. A bit like Sex a few decades ago.

At various times the very mention of these two subjects was the best and quickest way to bring endless group chatter to an, er, deathly silence or giggly close.

Now, Death seems to have overtaken Sex in the popular discussion stakes.

Fashion seems to apply to just about everything, doesn't it?.

Surely Nielsen never sang Turandot or Isolde, (s)he was a mezzo for heaven's sake!

There must be a statistical distribution that can show that the age (and other factors) of our boarders correlates with a proportion of those dying now who, when they were at the heights of their careers, were our own contemporaries among possible role models and others who might have attracted our attention.

What I mean is that most of us (I suspect) are at an age when deaths among our contemporaries, including those we admired when we were younger, are rather more common than they once were.

As for sex, it's difficult to think of a time when it's gone out of fashion. However, Thomas Hardy summed it up rather well (last verse especially):
                              I LOOK into my glass,
                              And view my wasting skin,
And say, “Would God it came to pass
My heart had shrunk as thin!”

                              For then, I, undistrest
By hearts grown cold to me,
Could lonely wait my endless rest
                              With equanimity.

But Time, to make me grieve,
                              Part steals, lets part abide;
And shakes this fragile frame at eve
                              With throbbings of noontide.
