Apologies if its already been said, - I cant face checking 65 pages - but when did you last see a manual typewriter (outside a museum)? Or, for that matter, a dedicated word processor? I learned to type on a manual machine, then moved on to word processors (at work, I never owned one).

Something else that has almost vanished is the fax machine, though some businesses still give fax numbers. I well remember standing over the one at work, praying that it would print a little pink dot to show the page was successfully transmitted.

I just posted 'electronic typewriters' .. even the one I have with a small LCD display is old hat and lies dying in the corner of my garage. As indeed does a fax machine.

            Right here. Today. Accumulating rust.

The last time I was able to get ribbons for it was more than 10 years ago, in WH Smiths in Lakeside. On a subsequent visit, the cashier said, "Sorry sir, we don't do them any more", and I returned home and burst into tears. "What's wrong?" "What are we all going to do when the electricity finally goes forever?" I gasped out, between the tears.

I don't know about those, but I maintain that we still have no high speed trains in UK, given the real ones that some other countries have.

Fax technology has indeed pretty much vanished, yet there remain some organisations that depend upon it because they refuse to use email on the grounds of lack of security (which means that they've not installed secure email, not because the medium itself is especially insecure); I rarely receive faxes and even more rarely send them but I do so in each case via email ever since ditching my last fax machine years ago.

I imagine they created a wall of sound as they flew past.

                    Cigarette lighter sockets in cars.

How does one make coffee whilst viewing clifftop vistas these days?

Oh come come - don't get all misty-eyed. Cars still have the sockets, and the tech has moved on!

                      Espresso, signore?

Ooh! But - and I know I'm going to regret asking this - where do you lug it in? (I'm sure there isn't a socket in my car.)

... I expect the Cali limo has it plumbed in : I am sure the Armstrong-Siddely workshops make provision for such baubles.

You don't have to lug it - it's quite light and portable...

Seriously though: there's usually a 12v socket somewhere. I have two, actually - on in the central arm-resty bit and one in the boot.

And no, vinchaud - when we take the Hamstrung-Sidney, my man Jitters is always on-hand to deal manually with all beverage-related needs.

Are you taking the P? (Oh, no - it appears that I was!)

For the discerning Mafioso - take your contracts to their final destination safe in the knowledge that they can help themselves to their last Hoyo De Monterrey without having to interrupt your driving.
