At my old school the thick corporal-punishment implements made of whale-bone covered in shiny, quality leather (the 'tolly' to snotty-nosed young miscreants) were beautifully and expertly manufactured by an order of nuns called The Sisters of Mercy. Judging by demand they certainly had a good little business going there, bless them.
They don't make 'em like that anymore ... the implements or the nuns.
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.
My uncle Bob had the complete speeches of Winston Churchill on 16rpm records. He used to listen to one every night before retiring. However, his new wife soon put a stop to that little habit!
For me, the demise of 35mm films at the cinema is a great loss. Going to the pictures is simply an over sized blu-machine and an over priced sweetie shop.

Reason: Barely literate post!
Other childhood delights that the modern child is spared include:
Short trousers in all weathers, bread poultices, iodine, cod liver oil, and Virol. And then of course there was corporal punishment. In these northern parts we were subjected to the Lochgelly-made tawse, and then I moved to the different regime of the cane.

"The happiest days of your life"? Aye, right.
One can still obtain iodine - here in local pharmacies, at any rate!
We had halibut oil - a few drops on a cube of sugar. No idea why.
