    .

... watching the (excellent) series of Maigret with Bruno Cremer as the hero, currently on Talking Pictures TV - when did I last see a pipe-smoker? At school in the 1950s and '60s half a dozen of the schoolmasters (History, Geography, French, Latin) smoked pipes...

Not the service, but a live concert https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m001khdf just started(2-30). Sequence for Maundy Thursday.

Pipe-smokers used to be featured regularly in adverts; it was often the image of a contented Dad, smoking his pipe even when assembling a cabinet.

It's easy to forget how common indoor smoking was. I knew two men who shared a small office. One was a non-smoker, the other a chain-smoker. The once-white ceiling was yellow.

There's still a pub down the road called "The Pipe and Slippers" (ironically in the trendy area of the People's Republic of Stokes Croft, almost opposite Telepathic Heights and just up from Turbo Island).
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

... “it is quite a three pipe problem and I beg that you won't speak to me for fifty minutes.”

Sherlock Holmes, in The Red-Headed League, The Strand Magazine August 1891

Clearly this will require a substantial footnote for future generations...

Indeed, otherwise, they might assume it is a reference to crack pipes (as openly and presumably illegally sold on Amazon).

                    Sadly all too true.

What a splendid unit of elapsed time it is, but 3 doesn't go very well into 50!

15 minutes per pipe and a bit of refill and tamping time added?

Holmes was addicted to cocaine, so he may well have put something other than tobacco into his pipes!

The very fillip to my comment.

Not quite forgotten, thanks to a film on TPTV, is the Hovercraft.

As a boy I was taken to Rhyl to see the world's first passenger-carrying hovercraft, the Vickers VA-3. For many years afterwards I searched in vain for a mention of it, let alone a picture, in books on the subject. Since then of course we had the 'Mountbatten' class which ran a regular cross channel service for years, carrying cars as well as passengers. But I was made to feel that the VA-3 was a figment of my imagination until last week when I saw the half-hour Vickers publicity film of it.

At that time they felt it had a future, but After languishing in a Liverpool dock for a while I suppose it was 'reduced to produce'. I suppose no-one wanted it. With four turbo-prop engines to power a vehicle about the size of a bus, it must have been expensive to operate and although it was better than anything else at skimming over mud-flats there wasn't much call for that.

I remember being invited to a skittles evening in East Cowes, by the British Hovercraft Corporation. The children at the local middle school made paper hovercrafts rather than paper aeroplanes.

I think there’s still a hovercraft service between Southsea and Ryde.

On a Portsmouth Cathedral choir tour in 2021 I made a point of travelling to and from the IoW on this on the 'dumb day'. It claimed to be the only remaining regular passenger hovercraft service anywhere.

I hadn't realised that it was no longer possible to hover between the UK and France.
