Also: the glossy programmes they handed out with blockbuster films! Or perhaps you had to buy them - I think they were called "souvenir programmes"... Either way, they magically appeared in my infant hand at or after the film, and I still have somewhere the ones from Waterloo and Oliver! by both of which I was enthralled at the age of 8/9/10 ...

Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
    Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

      - we had the one sold with My Fair Lady - it gave me my first glimpse into the background of the whole business of making a film.

And with a torch to show you an empty seat when the lights were down.
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

          Films with intermissions.

The National Anthem at the end of every cinema presentation.

Barbirolli conducting the National Anthem before every Hallé concert

Which suddenly reminds me: bus conductors.

A girlfriend of the time who was employed as an usherette told me that those torches often picked out hands in places where they shouldn't have been!

That reminds me of a demonstrator, holding up a placard with the words, "Hands off Libya!" - to which a passer-by comments, "Very appropriate".

In my youth the Wanstead Kinema used to show classic "art" films, mostly French, films like L'Atalante. There were double snogging seats in the back row under the projector!

                              Their position was wafer thin.

Sounds like they were foiled, and given the finger.
