            I thought they were coming back - different name but similar shape and value.

              You told me it was because it caused tax difficulties for Dennis Baxter.

                  [QUOTE=Tony;535319]Gibbs' Bookshop, Manchester
                  QUOTE]

                  I went there on my first visit to Manchester in 1984 and probably visited almost weekly once I became resident in the city in 1987. I well remember the shock of the closing down sale in ?2003. By that point I wasn't able to get in more than about once a month, maybe more, and so I had no idea that it was going to fold. A real family firm.

                    What a great thread this is! It brings back so many memories. As I said above, not all good, but the vast majority are.

                      Yes Ros,Gibbs was a lunchtime haven for me when I worked in the city centre (early/mid 80's).
                      Many a forumite's path must have crossed in there over the years.

                          (Short trousers). There were senior boys' schools in Edinburgh in the 60s where shorts were worn by all pupils. Fortunately I went to one which was rather more enlightened, in that respect at least.

                          On a related note, "pupils". It would appear now that all school children, regardless of age, are "students". Who started that nonsense?

                            I am pleased to see that Gibb's still survives/ exists on the web:

                            but only as a book or antiquarian book specialist.

                                Yes of course, the 3-rail version was what I had in the period 1953-1960 plus maybe a few years....
