    Of course!

You could get away with up to 30 kG on some airlines!

It's the point at which it will have to be selected as the forum 'Hot Topic' on the FoR3 homepage that I'm dreading
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

I think the short-term memory of these scales is no myth; if I weigh myself and step off the scales and then step back on within a few seconds of the scales recovering and returning to zero (in the hope that the exercise will knock off a few grams), the second weigh-in will produce the same result but - crucially - far more quickly and with less effort and groaning (from both me and the scales) than first time around. Maybe it's a sort of 'homeopathic' memory?

We could always start a "Bathroom Scales II" Thread.

I thought this was a thread about an 80s indie band.

I am genuinely shocked to discover weighing scales were not invented by a Scotsman, but an over-achieving Englishman called Mr Richard Salter.

Do Scots have a superior diet and therefore didn't feel the need to invent such a thing?

I thought it was about voice warm-ups for arias in the shower!

You'd have preferred them to have been dreamt up by a Robbie Saltire, then?

I'll let you know when I've finished my typical daily breakfast of porage followed by a fry-up and finished with a deep fried Mars bar or three accompanied by a litre or so of Scottish real ale...

Sounds positively delicious ... is that what keeps you going composing all these long works of yours, ahinton?

No, I suspect the reason is that until fairly recently, very few Scots had bathrooms in which to place the scales.

And of course, when baths were installed, they were seen as a very convenient storage place for coal.

                                That's just a light snack.

(Btw, it's "porridge". "Porage" is a well known brand of porridge oats. There should be no advertising on this forum. )

As a further aside, porridge used to be made from oatmeal, not rolled oats, and usually once a week. It was poured into a drawer in the kitchen dresser, and then sliced for daily consumption. Delicious!
