Billed as so called ' Slow TV ' ie just naturally occurring sounds and lack of background music and commentary - in reality there was clearly some film editing of the journey and commentary from the crew, but this was minimal and by way of explanation at appropriate points.

Most enjoyable and all the better for the lack of intrusive background music in particular.
    I watched this, with pleasure.

There are two versions on iPlayer, one with commentary (link above) and one without.

Tornado was pulling real timetabled passenger trains between Skipton and Appleby last week. I remember that last time this happened, way back in 1968.

Of course the trains were fully booked before I even knew about the brief revival, but I wasn't going to miss the photo opportunity.

I do humbly admit to having "removed" the overhead wires, the Leeds-Skipton line having been electrified.

What a wonderful sight! I remember back in the early sixties travelling from Sheffield to Hawick en route to school camp, the Leeds to Carlisle stretch of 'The Waverley' behind Holbeck A3s which had been redeployed from the East Coast route following the introduction of the Deltics.

Great stuff, though I really didn't understand the bit about "real timetabled" running. It does seem to have been a one-off for a very short period, unlikely to be repeated again soon, and probably only a few people got on the train(s) who were expecting some other modes of transport - electric or diesel. I gather that the tickets were sold at the regular prices, rather than the prices which some special excursion trains run by non mainstream operators charge.

For me a timetable isn't much use unless it's fairly regular.

The Tornado trains were basically normal service trains, replacing the DMUs. Having said that, it was necessary to change at Skipton for the steam continuation, and a 2-car diesel train followed the very long steam hauled service to ensure that no passengers were stranded.

Indeed, but the use of the past tense "were" suggests that this was just a modification to a very short period in the timetable. Anyway, I hope everyone enjoyed it.

Now there's a spooky coincidence - I've just returned from lunch in the Castle Inn, Skipton with friends who were amongst those fortunate to get tickets for the run.

None of them expressed (ho-ho) the slightest interest in paying the £200 ticket fare for the Flying Scotsman later in the year.

A fine establishment. Happy memories of the ' Sheep Town Shepherd's Pie ' .... and a pint of chips on the side , followed by a trip over the road to Stanforths for a couple of 'growlers ' for tea.

Just a 2017 reminder not to forget your ‘Christmas pie’. Stand pie, Gala pie or large pork the variety will not matter but I shall pass on a Melton Mowbray. Yorkshire folk are not fetishists but we do love or … Continue reading →
