    William McIlvanney - 1936-2015

So sad to see the passing of the great Scottish writer William McIlvanney. As well as being lauded for his wonderful books including 'Laidlaw' and 'The Big Man', he also wrote and spoke with erudition about football, but he always appeared when I heard him on radio, or saw him on TV a very modest ordinary West Coaster. He was given a great accolade in some ways as BBC Radio Scotland interrupted the match commentary yesterday afternoon to announce the news of his passing, and the words spoken about him since by the great and the good show a man held in high esteem and great love in these parts.

Thanks for mentioning that, jc. I admit that when I read the news headline I only thought of him as a sports journalist, albeit a very good one

Clearly a man of wide talents.
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

You may be thinking of his brother Hugh, ff, a great sports journalist particularly on boxing and football and often on TV in the 60s and 70s, I seem to recall.

Oops … I probably was, though this not being one of the areas in which I shine - who can say? At any rate William indeed sounded a true intellectual, like all enthusiasts for the Round Ball Game…
