Talking of Beecham, I derive some amusement from this one whether apocryphal or not.

In rehearsal one morning: 'Cymbals, a grand smash of your delightful instruments to add to the general welter of sound if you please!
"The sound is the handwriting of the conductor" - Bernard Haitink

O.k. This one may be a bit esoteric. Who, responding to his agent's comment re. the Mothers of Invention concert with members of the BBC Symphony Orchestra at the RFH that there was so much going on, said "Yes, but none of it's any good."?

Well I would have to guess either Pierre Boulez or William Glock on that one.

No, this was an English composer with whom Glock had some difficult dealings at the end of his term as Controller of Music at the Beeb.

No, this was a composer whose work Glock did much to promote.

"I'm playing all the right notes—but not necessarily in the right order."
As I'm a simple higorant soul I'll go for this one - Eric Morecambe.
And regardless of who said it, it's a useful quote when things get tricky at rehearsals...

Very good, but for the bonus point, which work was he re-ordering the notes in?

Grieg Piano Concerto, and in response to Mr Preview who had the temerity to question his playing.
