"essentially just a big trash-out for [him]": "To me it was just silly, and out of tune, and bad. I couldn't listen to it. It sounded like [he] was trying for a funk record, and just picked the wrong guys. They didn't understand how to play funk. They weren't steady enough."

You just did! No, seriously, this (if I remember correctly) was Shostakovich on his 15th and final string quartet. I don't believe that it's ever actually happened like that, though...

One of the Steely Dan chaps about Bitches Brew. He also complains about the funk grooves on the Herbie Hancock album Headhunters "going on and on" which is a far sillier comment,

BTW, I don't think Bitches Brew WAS supposed to be a funk record, thought some of it was just messy.

Speaking of whom, I've been listening to the 'Steve Davis' of music a fair bit lately - his piano trios, esp #2. I fancy checking out his string quartets. Not knowing where to start, I was wondering if anyone could give a steer. I know Jayne is keen on his orchestral works, but does anyone know his string quartets?

Steely Dan are silly, full stop. IMHO. Well, they got silly.

Really? Not Elgar, then? Well, never mind; there's no harm in being wrong once in a while, is there? David Matthews has yet to write his 15th string quartet; that will be the next one for him to do, assuming that he decides to contibute further to the quartet repertoire (which seems pretty much an odds-on certainty, I would think).

Curious notion; on what might it be based, just out of interest? (I believe that his official opus number tally is around 147, but...). And might you by chance have a candidate for the "Hurricane Higgins of music"?...

Which of DM's string quartets would you say could be a rewarding place for the novice listener to begin with?

5 or 6, perhaps. The string quartet medium has obviously been an important feature of hisoutput and looks set to continue to be so. You mentioned his three piano trios earlier; I feel most forunate to be the dedicatee of the most recent - and the Leonore Trio's performances of all three are excellent.
