Broadly, What Parts of Radio are Still Quality?

    .....Positives, if possible, please.

Let's just accept that most of it isn't very good.

I think it was the "Positives if possible, please" that prevented me from my immediate thought "Well, the volume control's still pretty good".

There is quite a lot of Radio I'm grateful to have access to: Hear & Now, The News Quiz, Composer of the Week, those quirky half-hour documentaries on R4, The Essay, CDReview ... but I feel less and less that I've "missed" something when I forget to listen to it - if that makes clear what I want to say - and I'm more and more irritated by the presentation style. Maybe it's age ... ?

(Not mine, of course ... I'm still in my prime )

I relish Radio 3's CD Review on Saturday Morning.

Positives [in no particular order] on R3:
Presentation by Jonathan Swain, John Shea, Martin Handley, Verity Sharp, Lucy Skeaping, Alyn Shipton.
            CD Review
            Drama on 3
            Choral Evensong
            Through the Night
            Words and Music
Lunchtime Concerts - particularly of string quartets / quintets
            World on 3

            Will think more and return.

I thought we might get bits of radio kit.

The volume dial is acceptable, ferney, but those crazy modern pre-sets that don't set wouldn't be! In fact, it takes me a month to get half a dozen in place and it generally requires unplugging the fridge for a defrosting. A dreadful invention that belongs in a Ford Zodiac or Zephyr circa 1967-68, not that they weren't the most wonderful non-ecological vehicles.

Rather more than that I'd say - was at its best in the late 70s, when Barry Norman was chairman, and the panel included Richard Ingrams, Simon Hoggart and Alan Coren, both sadly "the late". Alan Coren's surreal riffs were Was still pretty good with SH in the chair....

But I'd say "I'm Sorry..." is firing on all cylinders under Jack Dee.....Did Lat-lit mean R3, or radio generally? I feel much better these days having abandined R3 before 0900 and switched to "Today", which is excellent.

                    In particular:
                    The Life Scientific R4
                    Words and Music R3
                    Composer of the Week R4
                    Much else of R4, R4E and R3
                    Some of R2.

Generally but including R3. There are issues with most stations - possibly all. Agree with the Jack Dee point and the Coren/Matthew "Freedom Pass" programme was a delight. There are certain times of the day with 9am to Midday being proverbially chronic across the board. Also mid-evening. If anyone can rescue those slots with something, great!

(I'm not against Sarah Walker but feel that she is more personable outside the vehicle she drives)

I imagine this is because the news has got worse.

BBC local radio sports coverage. quality and scope is good, and its importance to many people is very great.

I hope this was a typo as until I replace some of my HiFi kit changing channels is tiresome to say the least - the LCD bits have largely disappeared so R3 is 71.4 on a good day!
BTW, apologies for not putting attributions to quotes - I'm still finding out how things work.

                            Early Music Late (Sunday)
I know it is a concert chopped up but I find the two presenters’ (Simon Heighes and Elin Manahan Thomas) informative and affectionate talk between the music compensates the lack of programme motes very nicely. Applause is included just enough to add the ‘live’ atmosphere. The music is not all amazing discoveries but I’d say more ‘not so often heard’ than well known. All in all, a most enjoyable programme.
