    Robert Craft has died

    20 October 1923 - 10 November 2015

A remarkable figure whose rôle as regards Stravinsky's music has always fascinated me. A great and full life.

"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
    Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

A great Musician whose life was both blessed and cursed by his relationship with Stravinsky - the range of his Musical sympathies was astonishing, and as a conductor and writer, he has left so much valuable work. No finer conductor of Schoenberg - balancing the complex polyphony of the textures miraculously, and bringing out the spring in the step of the phrasing like no other conductor. A "good innings", but I shall greatly miss him.

A man whose name was appropriate to his musical skills. RIP

I replaced my fairly low data rate mp3s of his ground-breaking complete Webern with opus numbers (Marni Nixon being widely featured) with higher bit rate ones from QOBUZ but recently. Reading of his death, I sought to listen to his recording of his mentor's Threni, only to recall I had decided the asking price had been too high. However, an online search revealed it has recently been included in the DGG Stravinsky Complete Edition. Now duly ordered from Base.com. In the meantime, in the spirit of 'weddings and funerals' I will listen to some of his various recordings of various instrumentations of Les Noces.

Listening to one of his recordings of Stravinsky's Requiem Canticles (the Sony one), which he conducted at Stravinsky's funeral in Venice.

Having just assumed he had departed long ago without checking, I'm astonished how young he was when championing Stravinsky.

Me too. Given how long ago Stravinsky died, I'm astonished that Robert Craft was still alive until now (if you see what I mean)
