It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

For the first time I've removed a hard drive. It was my uncle who explained that the aircraft that was my old computer wasn't all serious computer but rather the casing housed a "black box". That I now have a metal cube next to me is an achievement. Most fleas would be more technically minded than me. Early on, I considered whether I would have the ability to use the box as a back up for my current computer. However, this was put paid to when I found the wires did not "slot out", as advised, but rather I had to cut through them all with a kitchen knife. Anyway, I will now be able to dump the old one minus the box. This is a relief because it hasn't worked for ages and it looms large in the living room dinosaur like. It is also sad because it was my Cape Canaveral, not that I am seeking to mix metaphors. It had a bigger screen and the screen was square. It was possible to make the world right from there. Ever since we have all been ordered into tiny rectangular pottering, the laptop is just another reminder of the way in which rights have been dropped.

I'm due to get my first dollop of state pension today: does that count as a personal first?

Actually, it's exactly three years since I joined the forum.
I've learned a lot, and hope I've made some useful contributions as well.
I've certainly made some friends (and only fallen foul of others a couple of times!) and had many laughs along the way.
With the birth of the new Composers subforum, we seem to be going from strength to strength.
Three cheers for all of us!

"Exactly three years"? Somehow, it seems so much longer.

Enjoy the pension - and don't spend it all at once; like on a trip to Betty's tearooms!

You didn't think I just meant that we should live a long time (to claim as much state pension as we can), did you?

You bloody need to live a long time to claim it these days.....

Anyway, office football has finished as we have moved office and the convenient 5 a side pitches are now inconvenient.
So by way of trying to get/ keep fit I think i am going to sign up to do a 5k cross country run in mid september, which would be kind of a first. I’m a distinctly mediocre long distance runner/ jogger , did a few three milers as a youngster, but I thought the somewhat public challenge would be interesting.
Been in training for a week or so, done a few 2+ miles over the last week and a 2 mile with two long climbs today, so hopefully getting into some kind of condition.
And now I’ve put it on here, I’ll have to do it. Trouble is, running is SO boring and I can’t run with headphones, the cross rhythms of steps and the music do my head in.
I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed or numbered. My life is my own.

I am not a number, I am a free man.
