It's stange how it does vary slightly between opera houses for operas or gala orchestra concerts. But for those people that like to merge in with the rest. I never see men in formal wear. In Dresden nearly all men wear smart jacket and trousers (even smart jeans) or lounge suits with shirt, tie and shoes. I virtually never see tee-shirts and trainers. When trying to enter the auditorium I was once told to take off a nylon rail jacket and take it to the cloakroom. In Berlin some people wear more casual clothing but many wear smart such as Dresden. The Deutsche Oper men are a touch smarter than the Berliner Staatsoper and Komische Oper. At the Munich opera houses most men smart wear as in Dresden. A woman in a long dress at the Deutsche Oper, Berlin as the only one stood out like a sore thumb.
Dress code in continental opera houses?

Re: the Glyndebourne Festival. This type of information about dress convention may prove most useful to some but I can imagine others being repelled by it all: http://www.glyndebourne.com/your-visit/what-to-wear/Last edited by Stanfordian; 30-10-15, 18:25.
