Terribly sad news - a genuine enthusiast for all things cultural and intellectual who really enjoyed debate and discussion: the range of her knowledge and the variety of the people who cite her as an influence are remarkable. I think the public dissemination of ideas in this country will have a little less colour from now on.

Oh, dear. That's very sad to see that at the top of the list. What a loss!It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.Comment

Apart from her books and articles, her contributions to 'Point of View' were always worth hearing and added pleasure to the day - wise without wearing erudition on her sleeve. A very sad loss indeed.Comment

I was hugely shocked and saddened to read about this. Lisa J was one of the most absorbing and delightful Fellows of my college when I went up to University - she'd been appointed at the time the place admitted women a couple of years earlier. But she was wonderful (and tolerant!) with us blokes too.
The very recent Desert Island Discs accessible from the BBC article linked in the OP is well worth a listen - I heard it in the car only a couple of weeks ago, no hint of this sad event which was clearly in the offing when she recorded the programme, so full of life.

One of her "Points of View"s, from 2010 - a reminiscence on her mother, made all the more poignant given that both were still living at the time - was re-broadcast this morning, and came like a breath of fresh air following the stuffiest Sunday Worship I have had the misfortune to endure while taking my Sunday morning bath:
