Seems like a good evening on BBC TV. First we had Bernstein on BBC Four, and now the Michael Portillo railways programme goes through Bulgaria to Turkey, with a bit o culture and history on the way. This one is really rather good. Pick it up on iPlayer.
Another interesting programme - BBC TWO - Portillo+Railway->Turkey

...the hackneyed bit being that Portillo ALWAYS has to be seen doing something:
Making attar of roses
Driving a train
Doing a Bulgarian dance
....you just wait for it to happen! Otherwise, it's good viewing, with some great shots of geography and architecture. History of the Balkan States especially interesting tonight.

Julia Bradbury is much better-looking and considerably less supercilious than Portillo though admittedly she does seem to meet some rather less interesting people on her walks.
IMO, the best TV offering lately has been a welcome repeat of Paul Murton's Grand Tours of the Scottish Islands, despite the constant sight of that funny hat, presumably an attempt to hide natural hair paucity. Some of the photography is absolutely stunning, an over-used adjective maybe but absolutely justified in this particular case.
BBC television at its impressive best, taking us to lesser-known places like those relatively neglected land-locked islands such as the gloriously wooded ones on Loch Lomond as well as the understandably predictable and majestic "Skyes and Mulls".
I haven't seen any of the latest MP-ex-MP series yet ... it too sounds really interesting and worth watching.
