Regarding not being able to boot to anything but Windows 10, is it not possible to do it by disabling Fastboot and Secureboot, or is that not possible with modern non-BIOS machines?

When is it time to give up on old kit? I discovered an Asus netbook in one of my cupboards recently - it was never very good, and tried to run Win XP, which was the option I chose when I bought it, thinking I could always put Linux on later.. Another drawer has a Dell Latitude X1 - which was a nice portable once - also running XP. Probably the best thing would be simply to bin them. The Asus is about 6 years old, the Dell about 10.

Try the charity shop before you bin them. They may still be of value to someone, eg in the third world, or for getting kids started on computers - bit like the first bike my parents bought me, it was a dreadful old wobbly wreck, but it was cheap and it taught me how to ride. They bought me a new one when I passed the eleven plus.

You are not encouraging me to consider buying another Windows machine .... even though there are some programs which are worth having which only run on Windows. Now I'll have to consider how much I might really need such programs.
