    Alexander ('Sandy') Faris - 1921-2015

I was sad to learn this morning of the death this week of Sandy Faris. I had the pleasure and honour of knowing him a little, having met and advised him on a couple of issues (my firm were his lawyers). To go to his lovely flat (acquired decades ago for four-and-sixpence or similar) in Primrose Hill was a treat, the place was packed with musical memorabilia, and one's time with him was packed with musical anecdotes.

And a thrill to have had the luck to know the chap who wrote a couple of the most-whistled theme tunes around our house when I was little, from 'Upstairs, Downstairs', much-watched at home when first broadcast

A gentleman and a true musician. RIP.

"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
    Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

If you go to the last 5 minutes of yesterday's PM Radio 4 programme, it has a full performance of the Upstairs Downstairs theme played by the BBC Phil (also a preceding piece with him).

I wondered what was happening on R4 ! Now I know, it was wholly appropriate.
