    The home of classical music?

I don't listen to Radio 3 for more than three hours a day, but seem to keep hearing Walking the Dog and Oh What a Beautiful Morning on a regular basis.

In what universe are these examples of 'classical music'?

Touching on much that has been aired here before, Rover. I mentioned Radio 3 Wind Down (accessed for research prurposes only) and saw V. Young's "When I Fall In Love" on the playlist. More and more widely the distinction between R3 and CFM lies in CFM playing classical music as easy listening; whereas R3 includes any kind of easy listening.
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

I think it's become frankly hypocritical to use this tag 'the home...' as if it suggest that you can't hear it anywhere else, when ,as we know, there are better classical radio stations available. And with complete works broadcast at only a few selected times of the day , they must know they're not really serving classical music seriously any more. I hear Linton Stephens and Sarah Walker praising certain works highly , but they don't explain why they don't play the whole thing if they love it that much. It's getting rather Orwellian, as if they're in denial about it: 'there is no cholera in Moscow '.

A bit like the claim that Radio Cornwall ‘plays the music you love’. Most of it I’m not very keen on, and about 25% I really dislike. I don’t think that R3u filled any gap in provision but a R3fw would have been a joy to many unhappy traditional R3 listeners.

I suppose they get away with the subtitle because of the BBC not being a commercial business (believe it or not), and therefore not subject to the Trades Description Act.

Perhaps Radio 3 might become 'The home of classical music - and so much more!'

I suppose in terms of BBC television and radio services, R3 is the only service where you can hear classical music more than just occasionally.

Yes Oh What a Beautiful Morning has had two outings in the last few days - Bryn and the peerless Gordon Macrae. No point Bryn even trying - he’s just not a Broadway musical singer. And he’s a lot better than most Opera singers at it .,And that’s the problem Bryn singing Figaro fine , singing Broadway not so good. There’s no fine musical judgement on R3 anymore . They’ve just had Evelyn Glennie playing a jazz version of Maple Leaf Rag on . Why ? She’s just not a jazzer.
The morning sequences have become background music for people like me too bone idle to choose a CD or too daunted by the choice on Qobuz.
Pretty soon both presenters and producers roles will be done by AI . So much cheaper - you’re hearing AI voices all the time and probably not even aware of it. Even those who’ve spent lifetimes recording voice overs are amazed at how good its got in the last year. R3 is becoming so predictable the jobs are eminently replaceable. And as for choosing the pre recorded music - unlike a lot of speech radio -it’s not the high skill job that Radio producers think it is.

Can you recommend a CD version?

There's always this version... ~0:25 in.

News today that the BBC has been fined by the Competition and Markets Authority for colluding with other broadcasters over freelancer pay rates. The BBC says that it cooperated fully with the CMA's investigation. A BBC spokesman said it "takes its competition law obligations seriously".

But not when it comes to competing with Classic FM? I pose the question, merely. No accusation intended.

I've written on this topic before but it's worth repeating: the websites for R3 and R3 Unwind are absolutely terrible for newcomers to classical music. If the BBC wants to attract new classical fans, I'm baffled as to why R3 offers a blank face to the world. Radio 3 increasingly apes Classic FM in every aspect apart from its welcoming website, which is surely the avenue that most newcomers will take. The classical music community on Reddit has 2.4m members and regularly has threads started by people who want advice on how to get into classical music. The need is plain. Yet Britain's public broadcaster has forgotten its pedagogical remit and offers not much more than the R3 schedule, a large "Play" button and acres of wasted screen space.

I spot an analogy here. Whenever I see the huge areas of wasted space used by the mainstream TV stations for their news broadcasters to wander aimlessly around, now that they no longer sit behind desks, I always reckon on the number of homeless people they could easily accommodate.

As is demonstrated now just about all day everyday on R3...
