I don't know how AC is still in a job, he makes Kevin Keegan "There's only one team going to win this" look like the soul of caution. I spent half the weekend's matches shouting at him to shut up after the endless "Britain now only two points away from victory ..." etc. stuff.

You'd think from the number of times his comments have been followed by a string of points lost that he'd have learned by now, but oh no. I just could not believe how, after the Murrays had won their cliffhanger, he was piping up: "It will take a real miracle for Bernard Tomic to beat Murray tomorrow." So he didn't see the match against Gilles Simon in the previous round, where Murray was practically crawling round the baseline with exhaustion by the end of it?

He clearly has a huge ego ("Shall I go and photobomb them?" he mused, as the camera panned round the court to where the Davis Cup team were posing for photos after their victory). And he's patronising with women ("Who was it who won the French Open in 1976? Why, a little cutie called Sue Barker!")

    Dreadful man.

And he has a CFM connection.

      I agree with John.

      Dan M was the best.

      "Oh I say........what a dry volley".

Belated congratulations to the British team for winning the Davis Cup in Belgium in a difficult week.

Also well done to Djokovic in the ATP but commiserations to the greatest tennis player of all time.

Yes, well done to the Murray Family from Dunblane! ...

          A. Murray's winning shot was an all-time great. He had no business even getting to the ball never mind execute the perfect lob to win the game, match and trophy.

          Wonderful stuff!

Does anyone here wonder if Schönberg ever said "anyone for tennis?" (whether or not in Gershwin's presence)...

Yes - I do know and he didn't because the Bernard Shaw phrase (1914) was "Anybody on for a game of tennis?" from the character Johnny rather than Richard Tarleton and then you have to go to Bugs Bunny in "Rabbit Fire" and "Singin' in the Rain" (1951-1952), both long after Gershwin. There is no reason why he should have come up with that phrase.

Thank you for your helpful confirmation; I presume that you are certain that Arnie was unaware of GBS, then?...

No I'm not.......but the GBS phrase - in Misalliance - is different.

Congratulations to Jo Konta for getting as far as the semi-finals in the Australian Open before being defeated and good luck to Andy Murray in the final.

Much has been made of Konta's Australian-Hungarian-Spanish background but at least she isn't rugby's Dylan Hartley who is a New Zealander by birth.

I doubt that close analysis of Djokovic's words about controversy midweek was reassuring, nor the odd match where he made masses of unforced errors.

But as Roger Federer said, if allegations are to be made, names should be mentioned. Federer, of course, remains, the greatest tennis player of all time.

Beaten to it again, john ... yes, AM has nothing to lose tomorrow, he should just go for it aggressively, imo. He has the talent to beat Djoko but, as you say, it is a big task. Djoko is not No 1 by a country mile through accident.
