Originally posted by RichardB View PostThat is exactly right. Now the top politicians are making this into a "diplomatic incident", and I notice that a FB friend (ex-friend I should now say) posted a request to sign a petition calling for him to be allowed into Australia to play, and for him not to be "treated like a criminal". (So far a little over 5000 people have signed it.) As far as I can see he isn't being treated like a criminal but like someone who has failed to fulfil the entry requirements for the country he's trying to visit. As the Australian authorities have said, he's free to go home whenever he wants.

In any case it appears to me that he seems to think that as a top tennis player he can walk over the regulations in cabinet minister style - picked the wrong country didn’t he?

Conclusion from the D Telegraph (free artcicle )
'But of course - the real debate is not about natural immunity. It's about the fairness of a country with some of the strictest Covid entry rules in the world granting an exemption to an unvaccinated, wealthy tennis player while many of its own citizens have been prevented from seeing loved ones in other parts of the world - and even other parts of the world.'
It also points out that immunity is stronger for a vaccinated person after a breakthrough infection than for a 'fully unvaccinated' person.
The issue for Australia is also whether they messed up by suggesting ND was exempt and then changing their mind after he'd arrived in the country. But I'd have thought that for that he may be entitled to financial damages not entry to the country. It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

There is also question mark over the statement that he had Covid on 16 December, as social media posts show him attending public events unmasked on 16 and 17 December (when he claims he was positive). This photo taken on 17 December shows him greeting fans unmasked.
"I do not approve of anything that tampers with natural ignorance. Ignorance is like a delicate exotic fruit; touch it and the bloom is gone. The whole theory of modern education is radically unsound. Fortunately in England, at any rate, education produces no effect whatsoever. If it did, it would prove a serious danger to the upper classes, and probably lead to acts of violence in Grosvenor Square."
