Well done for finding and resurrecting this Tennis thread, Bryn. Can't imagine why no-one's done it before! I enjoyed all the Wimbledon I've managed to see on TV this year, including the men's and women's finals. Talking of indigenous Australians, maybe some are old enough to remember Evonne Goolagong who certainly sounded very 'indigenous'. I think she latterly became Evonne Goolagong Cawley.

Didn't watch last night's match, but woke up to discover Emma is in the Final. Great stuff. So she stands a 50/50 chance based on random probabilities of being the champion. Either way that's a really big achievement. Should be exciting to watch - if you have access to a stream or TV channel.

Her opponent tomorrow, Leylah Fernandez, hasn't dominated in quite the same fashion (she required 3 sets to win last night), but has probably had tougher opposition.
Raducanu has played Fernandez once before at Junior Wimbledon in 2018, when Raducanu won.
Even if she doesn't win tomorrow, its an astonishing achievement. She was ranked 336th in the world just a few months ago, and after last nights win will now move into the top 30 (and become the British No. 1). This is also the first time a qualifier has ever reached a Grand Slam final, and she is the first British woman to reach the final of the US Open since Virginia Wade in 1968!"I do not approve of anything that tampers with natural ignorance. Ignorance is like a delicate exotic fruit; touch it and the bloom is gone. The whole theory of modern education is radically unsound. Fortunately in England, at any rate, education produces no effect whatsoever. If it did, it would prove a serious danger to the upper classes, and probably lead to acts of violence in Grosvenor Square."

I watched live, it finished at 0445, as I enthused on the Matthew Passion thread!
Raducanu swept through the first set and was quickly ahead in the 2nd, but Maria Sakkari (17th seed) fought back fiercely, so Emma had to hold her nerve. Which she did - and more, playing with astonishing verve, power and confidence. Now she meets another unseeded teenager (Leyla Fernandez) in the final, what a chance she has...
And yes - Virginia Wade, last to reach the US Final in 1968 (which she won against BJK) was in the Arthur Ashe crowd......
Final due to start 21:00 BST Saturday....Last edited by jayne lee wilson; 10-09-21, 14:40.
