Well done for finding and resurrecting this Tennis thread, Bryn. Can't imagine why no-one's done it before! I enjoyed all the Wimbledon I've managed to see on TV this year, including the men's and women's finals. Talking of indigenous Australians, maybe some are old enough to remember Evonne Goolagong who certainly sounded very 'indigenous'. I think she latterly became Evonne Goolagong Cawley.

          A pedant apologises.

Although in mitigation he would like to point out that Ms. Barty did play cricket in Australia at first-class (one day) standard some years ago. Definitely an all-rounder.

And I too add my thanks to Bryn for bringing the tennis thread back to the show courts, as it were.

Yes, she is one Hell of an all-rounder. Indeed, I would guess that she would also excel at rounders.

Fantastic performances from Emma Raducanu at the US Open. Next up - the Olympic Gold medalist. I don't think we know what's going to happen. Ash Barty was knocked out by the player Emma played last night.

                Exciting times!

And the player she faces next knocked Ash Barty out of the Olympics.

I think you're a bit behind the times. Emma played Sorribes Tormo (who beat Barty in the Olympics) a few days ago - and won 6-0 6-1, and yesterday played Shelby Rogers who beat Ash Barty in the US Open recently. ER vs Rogers - 6-2 6-1. The next match is vs Belinda Bencic - the Olympic champion. It will be very interesting.

Didn't watch last night's match, but woke up to discover Emma is in the Final. Great stuff. So she stands a 50/50 chance based on random probabilities of being the champion. Either way that's a really big achievement. Should be exciting to watch - if you have access to a stream or TV channel.

I saw her quarter final match against Bencic, which was seriously impressive. The match wasn't even close and she dominated her more experienced and higher-ranked opponent almost from first to last. If anything, her win last night was even more comfortable. She has come through the nine matches of qualifying and the tournament proper thus far without losing a set, and not conceding more than 4 games to her opponent in any of the sets played so far.

Her opponent tomorrow, Leylah Fernandez, hasn't dominated in quite the same fashion (she required 3 sets to win last night), but has probably had tougher opposition.

Raducanu has played Fernandez once before at Junior Wimbledon in 2018, when Raducanu won.

Even if she doesn't win tomorrow, its an astonishing achievement. She was ranked 336th in the world just a few months ago, and after last nights win will now move into the top 30 (and become the British No. 1). This is also the first time a qualifier has ever reached a Grand Slam final, and she is the first British woman to reach the final of the US Open since Virginia Wade in 1968!

The whole theory of modern education is radically unsound. Fortunately in England, at any rate, education produces no effect whatsoever. If it did, it would prove a serious danger to the upper classes, and probably lead to acts of violence in Grosvenor Square."

I watched live, it finished at 0445, as I enthused on the Matthew Passion thread!

Raducanu swept through the first set and was quickly ahead in the 2nd, but Maria Sakkari (17th seed) fought back fiercely, so Emma had to hold her nerve. Which she did - and more, playing with astonishing verve, power and confidence. Now she meets another unseeded teenager (Leyla Fernandez) in the final, what a chance she has...

And yes - Virginia Wade, last to reach the US Final in 1968 (which she won against BJK) was in the Arthur Ashe crowd......

Final due to start 21:00 BST Saturday....

All that inhaling of the pure, unpolluted Bromley air in her early years will have played its part towards her success, undoubtedly.
