The new name would still eschew capital letters, he [Jason Windsor, chief executive] said. “I apologise to anyone upset by the lower case 'a'.”

Someone at the FT still hasn't caught up. Errors in headlines aren't unusual, but the article itself sticks with the upper case 'A'. The BTL contributors are having great fun with the whole thing; plenty of attention for the firm but not necessarily of the right sort...

Our local rag reports that a royal visited Ipswich yesterday to open a new dental facility - a royal what, I wonder? (For the record, it was the Duke of Gloucester).

Thinking of Royals - Duke of Gloucester was built to replace Princess Anne after the 1952 Harrow crash.

            ... thanks for that.
Wiki gives full details of the crash, of which I had been unaware (well, I was only four months old at the time) - including of the locomotives to which you refer -

"The second locomotive of the Liverpool train was No. 46202 Princess Royal Class 4-6-2 Princess Anne, which was a rebuild in conventional form from the experimental steam turbine Turbomotive and had been in service as Princess Anne for only a few months. It took serious damage in the crash, having its leading bogie torn off and main frames buckled, and was scrapped after being deemed beyond economic repair.[31] The loss of this locomotive led to the introduction of the BR Standard Class 8P Pacific, an experimental three-cylinder 4-6-2 No. 71000 Duke of Gloucester, which is today preserved."

Warm enough to have lunch (and then probably doze off) in the garden.

Anorak's footnote to the Harrow 'mishap':

Some writers have mistakenly assumed that the rebuilding of 6202 was a result of its damage, whereas it had been withdrawn some years previously and eventually rebuilt as a 'hybrid' Pacific, i.e neither a 'Lizzie' , nor a 'Coronation '. Some enthusiasts consider it the finest of all in its 'Princess Anne' guise.

6202's boiler was salvaged and used again.

Those with access to Numbers 10 ad 11 of the 'LMS Journal can read a fascinating article on the 'Turbomotive'.

71000 is of course still with us, having run for many more years in preservation than it did for British Railways. . I've seen it several times at Crewe.

This amusingly perceptive episode on Radio 4 of The Infinite Monkey Cage on the theme of altruism offered one good reason to be cheerful last Saturday, its only unraised question being which societies are more propitious to altruism, individualist or collective?

The left will say collective, because altruism will become normalised, whereas the right will argue for individual voluntarism on grounds that devolving duty to the state disempowers individual responsibility and therefore generosity towards others. The latter idea seems to be that people have constantly to be prodded to be unselfish. Collectivism could and should be as much about freeing up individuals for (altruism-orientated) co-ordinated, rather than haphazard community involvement, as about efficiency and productivity. Answers on a postcard.

I suppose (though this could also be a Grumble!):

Surprisingly short wait to get through to HMRC to query a very strange coding recently received for tax year 2025–2026.
Turns out that the Self-assessment Unit hadn't communicated with the PAYE Unit, so THIS year's code was wrong; all been recalculated for next year, and I may end up with a one-off payment I have to make, but that will simplify future codings.
I'm actually hoping for a refund, but think that's unlikely!

The Ramblers Association tried this one, as did Decca Records, East Riding of Yorkshire Council and The Guardian. They all managed to look rather silly and eventually recanted.
Parkrun still uses a lower case p, even at the beginning of sentences, where it looks even more ridiculous, but I flood their Facebook pages with lots of capital Ps. When others complain that I shouldn’t, I remind them of the correct usage of proper nouns/adjectives.

I think they should demolish all delivery rooms and just use their car parks.

Well it makes a good headline but it isn't accurate. The baby was delivered in the car, not on the street - that would have been quite something but not at all pleasant for the woman involved...
